Identity

Hey class - Hope you are all enjoying Persepolis as much as we are. For this post, I wanted to talk a little bit about identity. What makes a person's identity? The music they listen to? Their religion? Their political beliefs? What makes your identity?

In Persepolis, we see that Marji is forced to wear the veil. I feel that clothing is an important part of expression. It allows us to show the team we're rooting for (go sabres!), our favorite brand, or even a funny statement. How would you feel if you were no longer allowed to wear what you wanted? How do you think that clothing and identity are linked?

I think that clothing and identity are directly linked because a person is able to express themselves through what they are wearing. If everybody wore the same thing people's sense of identity would be very weak because everytbody would be the same. Living in a world of conformity would sort of put a damper on self- expression. If I were not able to wear what I wanted I would go insane, because that is how I show off my personality. I like to be my own person and having to dress like everybody else would not be bad in my book.

Cloths and music show a persons Identity because they show what that person likes and does when their on there own. The music people listen to shows how they feel about life.Their religion shows how they feel about GOD and the background they come from.Their political belief show how they feel about their Government. What makes your Identity is the things you do to show your true self and what your about.

Cloths are what people use to express there selves. Thats why in this book they choose not to wear the cloths that women are suppose to wear because they want o express there feeling throught what they wear as women

Clothing allows all people to express their freedoms. Not only your identity as a person but your mood, maybe if your really happy you wear bright colorful clothes,or if your down you wear darker colors. We take this simple freedom of being able to express our own feelings, moods, and overall identity for granite. Being forced to do anything such as wearing the veil in Marjis` case puts a retraint on not only who she is but who she can grow to be. She must hold her true identity inside she doesn`t have the freedomto express herself as we do.

In some countries clothing cannot be looked at as a expression or linked to a person's identity. Not because they don't care but due to the way of living. It's like anything in life that your allowed to do and then all of a sudden you can't like the hoodies in school. Rules are rules and you have to follow them even if you don't like them. I really believe that because people judge mainly of apperence what you wear can usally get is an ever lasting impression.

Clothing can be an great example and most times can show what type of person you are. In the book I felt that it was unecessary for people to be forced to wear veils. If I ever lost the privlage to wear what I want to wear I would be upset because I always want to wear comftorble clothing.

Wow-a lot of you made very good points. I was wondering if any of you thought thee was ever a time that people should "conform" and wear certain clothes?

I wouldnt like if we werent able to wear whatever we wanted to wear. i feel as if my clothing is a huge part to my personality, and wearing something i didnt want to wear would make me feel uncomfortable.

I would fell like going on a rampage and protest against what they TRY to make me wear.I would not wear the clothing without a fight.i dont think they are linked necessarly because your identity is what you make and how you act.

I think clothing is connected to are identity in many ways because hip hop culture wear jordans and other cultures wear things like etnies and DC's. Black people listen to mainly hip hop and rap.White people listen to rock and roll and all these different races do, wear and like different things. In persepolis you knew marji was Iranian because she wear burquas and folllow a strick religion. So clothing definley repfesents everybody identity...../

i think that clothes and identity are linked because your clothes are a stament of you being diffentent from everybody else.

I think that the clothing and idenitity are linked because it represent who you are,What you do and what you like.

Excellent responses guys!

I like that people are taking both sides. Some say, yes, clothing and identity ARE linked, and others do not really think that there is a connection between the two.

It's a tough concept to grapple with, and I applaud your efforts.

I look forward to more comments

I really liked what Matt said about how we're judged by how we look and how it leaves an impression. It's hard to believe that something as simple as pulling your bangs out from underneath your veil can place you in the position of a rebel. But, I mean I cut all my hair off last summer certainly breaking away from the ideal of city girl long hair, sweet - flirty talk and being put in the position of a little revolutionary with my curly afro - when all I was doing was trying to do was stay cool. I mean for Marji I guess in part she was trying to make a statement but, at the heart of it she was just trying to express herself. Have you ever done something just because you thought it would be a change and been misjudged or mistreated because of it?

i think that identity is a key apart of a person life. it gives distinction of a person. this is significant because it gives a varied perception to society. music is a vital part of a persons identity or a societal perception, people think that if you listen to rap your a gangster, in which in turn you can just be an average guy that likes rap. religion can also determine you identity, it determines you character, by disciplinary rule. your political views can also determine your identity, your views on how your own rights should be protected. what makes your identity is your character and your persona. if i was unable to wear what i wanted i would fight that oppression because wearing what i want gives me a chance be me, but when i am limited to doing what i want i am forced to succumb to the status quo.

If I were forced to wear things and no longer permitted to wear things that were a part of my identity, I would be upset. Aside from being upset that my freedom to wear what I wished would be gone, I would feel as if there were few ways for me to let my identity be visible to others. I would feel as if I was a part of something where everyone was the same rather then being myself and doing as I choose to show who I am.
